DAMIEN Ryan has reclaimed his throne as Mayor of Alice Springs for a third term – taking more than two thirds of the votes.

The popular incumbent mayor was favourite to win, going head-to-head with council newcomer, ecowarrior Jimmy Cocking.

Mr Ryan credited his family and friends – “the team of Ryan” – with his win.

“My family has always supported me but the team of Ryan has had a very successful day,” he said.

“I’m really happy and this would be my best result in the three times I’ve run so far. I appreciate the fact that so many people have nominated but you have to go with what the community wants.”

Comparing this year’s election to previous years, Mr Ryan said it was largely fought on social media.

“The use of social media gave me very wide coverage in the community,” he said.

“Using all of those, I was very surprised how many people followed it when I spoke about local issues and what council can do.”

Mr Cocking described the election race as “an amazing” journey.

“I’m excited about the result – at this point I was excited if I got 20 per cent of the vote,” he said.

“I’m excited about being on council, should that happen and I am absolutely overwhelmed by the support within the community.

“I think there has been a really strong message that people want to see the town council be leader and not just react to external forces. I look forward to being part of the council.”
